Get clear answers about using Rujira, from cross chain swaps to trading and earning with native assets.
Secured Assets
Understand what Secured Assets are, how they stay 1:1 backed, and how they function across Rujira products when moving between chains.
Secured Assets are cross chain tokens that are backed 1:1 by native assets stored in THORChain's decentralized vaults.
This means every Secured Asset represents a real cryptocurrency such as BTC, ETH, or XRP that is locked inside THORChain's vault system. Because of this design, Secured Assets allow you to use native crypto across the Rujira ecosystem without relying on centralized custodians or bridge protocols.
These assets allow native cryptocurrencies to be used across Rujira's decentralized finance products, including trading, lending, and liquidity strategies.
Quick definitions
Native assets: cryptocurrencies that exist on their original blockchain, such as BTC on Bitcoin or ETH on Ethereum, instead of wrapped versions created on other networks.
Bridged assets are typically IOUs created by bridge protocols that move tokens between blockchains.
When a bridge creates a token on another chain, it usually represents a claim on the original asset stored somewhere else. These bridge systems often rely on wallets or validators external to the network and have historically been vulnerable to hacks or operational failures.
Secured Assets are different because they are protected by THORChain's decentralized vault system, which removes the need for third party bridges.
Quick definitions
Bridge: a system used to move tokens from one blockchain to another by locking the original asset and creating a wrapped version on the destination chain.
IOU: a token that represents a promise that the real asset is held elsewhere and can be redeemed later.
Wrapped assets are tokens issued by centralized companies that hold the original cryptocurrency in custody.
For example, a wrapped version of Bitcoin on another chain may be issued by a company that holds real BTC in reserve. This means users must trust the issuer to safely hold the underlying assets.
Secured Assets remove this dependency because they are backed by assets stored in THORChain's decentralized vaults, meaning there are no centralized custodians controlling the funds.
They also do not require KYC1 or other centralized identity checks, and there is no arbitrary freeze of user assets as commonly seen on centralized exchanges.
Quick definitions
KYC (Know Your Customer): identity verification procedures commonly required by centralized exchanges and financial services.
Secured Assets are created when a native cryptocurrency is deposited into THORChain's decentralized vaults.
When a user deposits an asset such as BTC into the vault system, a corresponding Secured Asset is created inside the Rujira ecosystem. This token can then be used across Rujira's decentralized finance products.
At any time, the Secured Asset can be redeemed for the original native asset, which is released from the vault.
This ensures that each Secured Asset remains fully backed.
Yes. Every Secured Asset is backed 1:1 by the corresponding native cryptocurrency stored in THORChain vaults.
This means that each token can always be redeemed for its original native asset.
For example, a Secured version of BTC is backed by real BTC stored in THORChain's decentralized vault infrastructure.
Currently, Secured Assets are primarily used within the THORChain and Rujira ecosystem.
They can be traded through THORChain liquidity pools, used across Rujira's decentralized finance products, and sent to other THORChain addresses. However, they are not designed to move freely between all external chains.
Instead, you can move Secured Assets between Rujira (for example BTC) and their home chain (for example Bitcoin) by depositing and withdrawing through the Portfolio page.
